Comic Book Conventions
An internationally known comic book convention is held in San Diego, CA and is known as Comic Con or as Comic Con International: San Diego. It is a four day convention that has been going on since the 1970s when Shel Dorf founded it. There are two other conventions held annually by the same organization but are in San Francisco, WonderCon and the Alternative Press Expo.
The conventions are held to showcase comic books. In addition, the convention also features science fiction, fantasy, television, and film. Because the convention has gained momentum over the years, the convention has broadened its feature topics. At the convention you will also learn about fantasy novels, anime, horror, collectible card games, webcomics, video games, and manga. On average at the San Diego Comic Con there are 125,000 attendees. If you are a part of these industries, you can have the chance to win the Inkpot Award.
At the convention you will participate, see, and hear different panels, workshops, and seminars. All of which are held by comic book professionals. Comic con is held in a large venue because they need a lot of floor space for everything that is offered at the convention. There are a lot of exhibits to see about comic books, TV networks, and media production companies. Comic book collectors show off their prized possession comic books, and merchants are there to sell them as well. After buying a comic book, or bringing your own, you can get them signed. Comic Con has what they call Artists’ Alley set up. Different comic artists and writers are lined up and willing to autograph their comic books.
This summer the Comic Con convention is being held July 23-26. There is a preview night that will take place on July 22 at the San Diego Convention Center. However, if you don’t have your tickets already, you won’t be able to go. The convention has already Sold Out. The first time the convention sold out was last year, 2008. The convention has come a long way since its debut 40 years ago. The first convention was held at the U.S. Grant Hotel, in San Diego, and was only a one day event. The first convention was held as a test to see if people would be interest in later conventions. They used the event to raise funds for San Diego Comic Con. The first show was a hit and set the ground work for the next 40 years.

Shakespeare's Rhetoric of Comic Character $47.48 First published in 1985. In this revisionist history of comic characterization, Karen Newman argues that, contrary to received opinion, Shakespeare was not the first comic dramatist to create self-conscious characters who seem 'lifelike' or 'realistic'. His comic practice is firmly set within a comic tradition which stretches from Plautus and Menander to playwrights of the Italian Renaissance. |

The Language of Comic Narratives $137 The book offers a comprehensive account of how humor works in short stories, by presenting a model of narrative comedy that is pragmatically as well as semantically, grammatically and stylistically informed. It is the first study to combine a sequential analysis of the comic short story with a hierarchical one, merging together horizontal and vertical narratological perspectives in a systematic way. The book covers the main areas of linguistic analysis and is deliberately interdisciplinary, using input from philosophy, sociology and psychology so as to touch upon the nature, motivations and functions of humor as a cognitive phenomenon in a social context. Crucially, The Language of Comic Narratives combines a scholarly approach with a careful explanation of key terms and concepts, making it accessible to researchers and students, as well as non-specialists. Moreover, it reviews a broad range of historical critical data by examining the source texts, and it provides many humorous examples, from jokes to extracts from comic narratives. Thus, it seeks to anchor theory in specific texts, and also to show that many linguistic mechanisms of humor are common to jokes and longer, literary comic narratives. The book tests the model of humorous narratives on a set of comic short stories by British and American writers, ranging from Evelyn Waugh and Dorothy Parker, through Graham Greene and Corey Ford, to David Lodge and Woody Allen. The validity of the model is confirmed through a subsequent discussion of apparent counter-examples. |

The Comic Mind: Comedy and the Movies $9.98 Although books on the comedies of the silent era abound, few have attempted to survey film comedy as a whole--its history and evolution, how the philosophical visions of its greatest artists and directors have shaped its traditions, and how these visions have informed both the meaning and manner of their work. Blending information with interpretation, description with analysis, Mast traces the development of screen comedy from the first crude efforts of Edison and Lumiere to the subtlety and psychological complexity of "Annie Hall," As he guides the reader through detailed discussions of specific films, Mast reveals the structures, the values, and the cinematic techniques which have appeared and reappeared in comic cinema. The second edition of "The Comic Mind" treats the comic developments of the 1970s in terms of the traditions of film comedy set forth in the first edition, including a discussion of the evolution of Jacques Tati and the emergence of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen as the two greatest American comic stylists of the seventies. "The most comprehensive study of film comedy yet written in English. . . .The book's extensive index with references to companies from which 16mm prints of many of the cited films may be rented will be of great value to the film teacher and audiovisual librarian."--"Choice" |

Comic Potential: A Play $12.98 A sci-fi comedy thriller, "Comic Potential" is a play set in the foreseeable future, when everything has changed--except human nature "Comic Potential" is set in a television studio in the near future, where the director--an alcoholic has-been--and two assistants are making a daytime soap opera of the usual appalling sort. However, the difference here is that they are using actoids--robots programmed to act--and there are no scriptwriters. Into this situation comes the idealistic Adam, the nephew of the millionaire station owner, who wants to write comedy of the quality that Chaplin and Keaton once embodied. But when Adam falls in love with Jaycee Triplethree (JC333), one of the actoids on the show, everything is turned upside down as she grows more human and the line between actoid and human diminishes. When in anguish Jaycee finally cries that she can't say anything she hasn't been programmed to say, Adam points out that no one ever says anything original anyway. |

Electric Comic Book $16.13 The Blues Magoos' first album, Psychedelic Lollipop, earned the band a major hit single, "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet," and in the grand tradition of striking while the iron was hot, the New York-based quintet were back with their second LP, 1967's Electric Comic Book, less than five months later. The sophomore effort is a noticeably more ambitious piece of work than the Magoos' debut, and while psychedelia was a catchphrase more than anything else on the first record, Electric Comic Book sounds trippier and a bit more expansive by comparison (the goofy "Intermission" tosses in some fairly obvious marijuana and cocaine references which would have been almost unthinkable in 1966, and the drug angle in "Pipe Dream" isn't exactly subtle). In addition, a few months of playing live had tightened up a combo who already sounded pretty good together, as well as bolstering the confidence in Ralph Scala's vocals and keyboard work and the fuzzy interplay of guitarists Mike Esposito and Emil "Peppy" Thielhelm. However, the blues and R&B elements that were a large part of Psychedelic Lollipop's strength have faded into the background here (except for a overdone cover of Jimmy Reed's "Let's Get Together"), and though the band could come up with a respectable pop tune, "Baby, I Want You" and "Take My Love" sound like throw-aways that were tossed together quickly to fill out a record not quite 30 minutes long (though "Take My Love" does have the very memorable line "Take my love and shove it up your heart"). Psychedelic Lollipop is well short of a classic, but overall it's a stronger and more coherent set of songs than Electric Comic Book, which sounds like the quickly recorded follow-up that it truly was, though it does have moments that suggest the band could have made another album as good as the debut with a bit more time and attention. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Weathercraft: A Frank Comic $17.48 For over 20 years now, Jim Woodring has delighted, touched, and puzzled readers around the world with his lush, wordless tales of "Frank." Weathercraft is Woodring's first full-length graphic novel set in this world-indeed, Woodring's first graphic novel, period -and it features the same hypnotically gorgeous linework and mystical iconography. As it happens, Frank has only a brief supporting appearance in Weathercraft, which actually stars Manhog, Woodring's pathetic, brutish everyman (or everyhog), who had previously made several appearances in "Frank" stories (as well as a stunning solo turn in the short story "Gentlemanhog"). After enduring 32 pages of almost incomprehensible suffering, Manhog embarks upon a transformative journey and attains enlightenment. He wants to go to celestial realms but instead altruistically returns to the unifactor to undo a wrong he has inadvertently brought about: The transformation of the evil politician Whim into a mind-destroying plant-demon who distorts and enslaves Frank and his friends. The new and metaphysically expanded Manhog sets out for a final battle with Whim... Weathercraft also co-stars Frank's cast of beloved supporting characters, including Frank's Faux Pa and the diminutive, mailbox-like Pupshaw and Pushpaw; it is both a fully independent story that is a great introduction to Woodring's world, and a sublime addition to, and extension of, the Frank stories. Weathercraft will be a defining graphic novel of 2010. |
