Comic books have long been a key source of inspiration in Hollywood, and in this documentary from Starz Inside, the folks behind some of the most popular comic-to-screen translations ever produced explain how the stories that have held children captivated for decades successfully made the transition to the big screen. Clips from such memorable comic book films as Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, American Splendor, Fritz the Cat are inter-cut with reviews from such prominent filmmakers and comic book creators as Stan Lee, Richard Donner, Guillermo Del Toro, Zak Penn, Roger Corman, Neal Adams, Mike Mignola, Avi Arad, and more. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Movie Guide

Comic Book Confidential

Comic Book Confidential

$16.96

Though aimed at those fastidious comic book collectors who spend exorbitant sums for old DC first editions (only to leave them unread and wrapped in plastic), Comic Book Confidential manages to convey the fanaticism and fun of this hobby to non-aficionados. Canadian director Ron Mann traces the history of the comic book industry, the idiotic purging of so-called violent comics in the 1950s, and the growth of the collectibles industry. Throughout the film, any comic book which does not meet Mann's exacting standards is trashed (Dell and Harvey, beware!) Among those interviewed are Marvel Comics mavens Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and EC mentors William M. Gaines and Will Elder. The underground comix movement is represented by Robert Crumb. Though he clearly loves comics, Ron Mann might have more successfully conveyed this with fewer clever camera angles. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In a sleepy small town there are two vibrant comic books stores that are rival universes unto themselves. Events spiral absurdly, violently out of control when the owners of the two shops -- nerdy hipster Ray (Donal Logue) and the nebbishy husband and wife team of Norman and Judy (Michael Rapaport and Natasha Lyonne) -- compete for a priceless collection of books left by the dead son of elderly Mrs. Cresswell (Eileen Brennan). Ray's friend, Archie (D.J. Qualls), tries to stop Ray from hiring a sleazy thief (Cary Elwes), but to no avail. Things get very ugly indeed. ~ Buzz McClain, Rovi

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked

$16.96

Taking the evolution of the comic book as its subject, this History Channel documentary stands out by merit of its comprehensive scope and insight. Beginning with the early days of 1930s vigilantes and the patriotic characters of the 1940s, the program reveals the current complexity and range found in the pages of contemporary graphic novels, and explores the ways that cultural climates and popular attitudes are reflected in comic books. All the heavyweights weigh in, including Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN), Frank Miller (THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS), Stan Lee (SPIDER-MAN, THE SILVER SURFER), Kevin Smith (CHASING AMY), Will Eisner (THE SPIRIT), and others. Keith David, who voiced Spawn from the TV show, narrates the program, which is presented by Peta Wilson (LA FEMME NIKITA). In addition to the star-studded cast, however, the documentary has a lot to offer fans and neophytes alike, with analyses of the role of collecting in the comic book world, and the creation of such seminal entities as DC Comics and Marvel as well as characters like Dark Horse, the Incredible Hulk, and Wonder Women. Contextualizing the innovations and progress of the art form, this documentary is not just an important exploration of the graphic arts, but a fascinating look back at the shifting cultural concerns of a nation.

I Am Comic

I Am Comic

$16.96

Comedian and filmmaker Jordan Brady offers an inside look at the art and business of stand-up comedy in this documentary. In I Am Comic, more than eighty professional comedians -- ranging from struggling beginners to veterans with over a fifty years of experience -- talk about the nuts and bolts of their work, discussing how they create their material, how an act comes together over time, the rigors of performing and their relationship with their audience. The film also focuses on one particular performer, Ritch Shydner. During the 1980s, Shydner was a working comedian who seemed poised for a major breakthrough -- he appeared on a number of top talk shows (including Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and David Letterman), he had his own special on HBO, he appeared on several situation comedies as a guest star and starred in several pilots for comedy shows built around him. Despite it all, Shydner never hit the big time, and he eventually quit touring to become a writer for television. After more than a decade away from the stage, Shydner is hoping to make a comeback, and Brady follows him as he tries to connect with a new audience and adjusts to the changing landscape of professional comedy. Featuring interviews with Phyllis Diller, Lewis Black, Sarah Silverman, Jeff Foxworthy, Dave Attell, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carlos Mencia and many more, I Am Comic received its world premiere at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
